Eco-project-planting-thing ideas!

http://home.earthlink.net/~madronenursery/

Searched for ideas for native plants to buy for the campus! This website had a list of flowers, trees, shrubs, blablablah... let me know what y'all think:)

NO IMPACT WEEK

The speaker on Monday was a nice break from continuous work in every class and seeing it's no impact week we didn't use the computer to look at stuff and we only had one handout that was two-sided. Throughout this week I've been trying to stick to making as less impact as possible in many ways and keeping my journal. I look forward to having a discussion on Monday about this week and talking a little about the book. Everybody have a great weekend!!!
Ashley Kathleen :)

Day 4

The guest speaker we had in Monday's class went over a lot of information about studying, habits, etc. It really helped and I think it will benefit me. I already went and bought a planner and it is definately keeping a lot of my stress down. I am ready for this weekend already and hopefully I do good on my test tommorow!!

Day Four

This week was extremely helpful. I liked learning the different ways that can help us study.. like the peppermint or chewing on gum. Im going to need to try those things for my next tests! haha but i am also excited about the planting thing and hope we can all figure it out! I agree that we should meet in the Laurel lobby since most of us live here and it'll be easier than everyone logging on due to problems and such. Now we just need a day and time! :) cant wait to see you guys again soon!! :) enjoy your weekend!

Class Number 4

So class today was pretty good. I liked learning some new study tips like the peppermint thing, I am definitely going to use that one now. I took 4 exams last week and I did alright but I'm disappointed in myself and how I managed my time. I had 3 out of the 4 exams in one day and I should have started studying sooner than I did. And I also should have taken more breaks. I had a busy week because I was concerned about other priorities in my life that took up more of my time than expected so I should start studying more as my classes progress through the chapters instead of saving most of the studying for the week of exams. But now I know and today's class really helped me. I'm glad we have a little time in the week that we can discuss things like this. And I hope I get into some study groups... so anyone in Biology 1320 with Banta? or English 2360 with Chavkin? Or perhaps some Math 1319 with Lund? :)

P.S. really, if you have these classes hit me up

:)))

The SLAC Presentor was very helpful...i didnt realize everything we had to help us. i will definetly be using the SLAC lab for my upcoming economics test that i am very nervous about. i think we should meet in laurel lobby sometime to discuss our group project. most of us live in Laurel anyways and i think it will be much easier that chatting on TRACS. class was good this week looking foward to next week

~Avery

UGHH...

So because of previous computer issues last week I procrastinated and didn't have a chance to blog before class today so I'm doing last weeks now. The Colin Beaven thing last Wednesday was nothing like I thought it would be...we couldn't here like half of the lecture and he just repeated what he talked about in the book, so I was kindof disappointed. As for the rest of the week I had two tests and my computer kept freezing up whenever I tried using the internet. So, hopfully this week will go just a bit better and be less stressful because it's no impact week.
Ashley Kathleen :)

Four

I thought the SLAC was interesting and entertaining. I will definitely be taking the VARK test to figure out the best way for me to study. I'm looking forward to the group activity, just not the expense of it. If there is any way we could figure out to not spend money, that would be great.

-Meghan

Study Tips

I thought the study tips were good ones! Although I've most of them before, it never hurts to go back over them. I like the peppermint one! That's the only tip that I have never heard about before. My mom actually just bought me a bag of mints, so I can put those to good use!

I think I'll try that in a minute when I start to study! (:

Chelsea Lovercamp

Study Group!

The presentation today about studying was really helpful considering I just got my first test grade back and it's not horrible but could use improvement. It's nice to know that we have those resources available to us here in case we need help or have questions about our classes and what we're learning. While I have time now, I am trying to study for my art test tomorrow. I'm going to try to find some people to study with but we'll see how that goes.

Study Habbits

So I had no idea about thw whole peppermint while studying thing. I am definitely going to use that tip because even though I try not to cram, sometimes I have to and maybe that will help me remember more of the things that I read. I also didn't know that you are only supposed to study for up to an hour before you take a break. That makes more sense though, because I always find myself getting disrtacted or not understnading what I read anyway.

US CLASS TODAY

Well todays class was very helpful because of the speaker who came in today talking about study skills and what to do and not to do. I actually learned something today....that if you are eating a certain thing like a candy while studing and then eat the same candy while you take the test you remember it better.
It really helped me know where to go if i need any help in any school work i am having a lot of trouble in and i just might go to one of them for Bio since that is the class i am having a hard time with.
Well i guess that is it and cant wait for the next class

um yeah?

So COLIN BEAVEN
I have a couple choice words, very dissapointed!!!!
Yeah sure it may have been croweded ,and everyone was talking, but hello he didnt do well as a speaker?
I wase expetcing him to be giving us advice from the book and telling us about his he experience, and how he went through it. NAhhh all he did was quote the book and I understand a few quotes but honestly? Lets be real folks he boerd me to death. I wanted to get excited about saving the earth, he was supposed to be the one making an impact on us to change our veiws so we can start this whole "no impact" goal that didnt happen for me. Overal this speech did not serve its purpose for me, I hope you guys could get more out of it.

The football game

What can I say, we did amazing! We beat Southern Utah to a drastic level! Once again Kevin and I decided to paint our faces, but this time we decided that we would also go hardcore-fan on everyone and go for the full body paint. I can proudly say that we were tagged as the number one fans two weeks in a row! I can't wait to see what we do next week!

See everyone tomorrow in class!

New thoughts about US 1100

Good day to all readers of this post. Honestly I do not know what I SHOULD write about. With that in mind, I have chosen to write about some new thoughts involving US 1100 itself.

This class is like none that I have ever had throughout my years of schooling. US 1100 feels more like a time of discoveries- not only of ideas, but of friends. The class itself strikes me even more because of its once-a-week frequency. Additionally, each person is like a work of art. I might or not prefer one over the other, but regardless of my preferences, each one brings his or her own unique traits and characteristics into the classroom.

Perhaps it is not much, but those are some of my thoughts concerning US 1100. Thank you. :)

colin beiber?

To be honest, I wasn’t thrilled about listening to Beaven speak at all. I had other things on my to-do list that was far more important, such as math homework. Making the environment a cleaner place wasn't one of my main concerns at first, but I really enjoyed the book. I felt that the book made some type of an impact on me, making me want to do something to change the world. This seminar started out slow because I couldn’t really hear one thing he was saying. People were being very disrespectful and I soon gave up on listening to what he had to say. Overall, I like how he put effort into everything he did to help reduce pollution and the amount of waste that we put into our environment; except for making his baby wear cloth diapers. I'm not going to lie, that is just gross. He made me realize that there is always something we can do to help, no matter how big or small it is. I’ve come to the conclusion that change starts with a single step. We all need to do our part in this community to help the environment.

OH CLASS NUMBER 3... :)

I'M STARTING TO ENJOY THIS CLASS MORE AND MORE. I REALLY FEEL LIKE I'M LEARNING IMPORTANT THINGS THAT ACTUALLY PERTAIN TO ME AND MY LIFE. THIS WEEK, MY FAVORITE THING WE DID WAS SPLIT INTO LITTLE TINY GROUPS AND DISCUSS OUR ASSIGNED READING FOR THE WEEK. IT WAS VERY INTERESTING LISTENING TO EACH INDIVIDUALS VIEWS ON WHAT THEY READ AND HOW THEY PERCEIVED IT. I'M DEFINITELY LOOKING FORWARD TO OUR CLASS PROJECT, I BELIEVE THAT EVERY IDEA THAT WAS THROWN OUT THERE WAS A GOOD OPTION BECAUSE THEY ALL REQUIRE GIVING BACK TO OUR COMMUNITY. I THINK IT'S SUPER COOL TAKING PART IN THE COMMUNITY AND STICKING TO THE WHOLE COMMON EXPERIENCE THEME. I ALSO CAN'T WAIT TO HAVE OUR CLASS LUNCH! SPENDING TIME WITH MY FRIENDS AND EATING ARE MY TWO FAVORITE THINGS TO DO IN THIS WORLD, SO YAY TO THAT! :) WHOOO. OKAY, WELL I HOPE EVERYONE HAD A SUPER AWESOME WEEKEND LIKE I DID! SEE YOU ALL TOMORROW.
PEACE AND BLESSINGS. ♥

Colin Beavan

I was looking forward to The common experience, Colin Beavan, presentation. But, after we got there I lost interest. There were so many distractions around me that it was hard to focus. What I did hear was mostly a summary of what he had written in the book. I enjoyed the book and I feel like this entire project is a great movement. I just wish that instead of a summary of the book, he would have told us about how his life is now that the project is over. I would like to know how his wife has changed, or how his daughter has changed since the project. She was so young during the process and I'm interested in how this helps or hurts that her very young, vulnerable growing time was during this project. I would like to know how that helped her start an eco-friendly life since she was practically raised that way when she was a baby, when children's minds are most-moldable.

Class, The Third

The third class was interesting. I enjoyed breaking up into groups and having a smaller discussion. I feel like this helps everyone get to know each other because we can actually have a conversation instead of just listening to an instructor, as we do in most other classes. I'm looking forward to our group project. I liked the idea of planting something because each one of us can have a small pot of a plant and that way, we can each have our individual contribution that creates our big group gift to the world. :)

week 3.0

The Collin talk was interesting I suppose, he honestly wasn't a very good speaker and everyone talked the entire time so I could hardly hear. I stayed after for the q&a and he at least answered some good questions. He basically just said word for word several of the stories in the book and I was much more interested in what he was still doing now verses what he did during his time writing the book. I am currently about to look up some sort of projects for our group thing after I post this.

Colin

I must say that I was expecting more. I do not know what really. I mean he mainly told me what I already read. He seemed nice enough, and he seemed worried about the planet. He just seemed to be saying what anyone of us could say if we got on stage and were told to talk about the book. Oh well, I can atleast say he was engaging, and ginuine.

Colin Beavan

I saw Colin Beavan's lecture in Strahan Coliseum on the 22nd of September. I noticed that his book appears to make some points that may seem ridiculous yet-- in my opinion-- the ideas shown in his speech are quite logical. I realized even more so that things such as electronic devices, while not the most diabolical creations on Earth, can trap us in a sensation of "false" freedom.

For example, one can use technology to communicate with people from around the world. However, perhaps it is better to sometimes just go out meet in person with others. Imagine the amount of people with whom you could become friends with if you were truly adventuring more often rather than inputting information into a gadget.

Personally, I do not think that I will be giving up my cellular phone or computer any time soon. That being said, I now feel more encouraged to "get out there" and meet new people. In multiple ways, I can strongly agree that Colin Beavan's lecture was very much worth the time.

Colin BEAVEN :/

Colin Beaven wasn't as interesting as i was anticipating he would be. :( He repeated a lot of what his book had already said. He didn't keep myy attention throughout his entire presentation. there seemed to be a lot more interesting things going on around me. like, the police officer telling students to move down from the top of the stands to the lower stands with his bright flash light. i was hoping Mr. Beaven would talk about more of his life after the project and his book to see how his life has changed since the experience. at the end of his speech everyone seemed to be very anxious to leave...even though it took forever to get out since they only had one computer to swipe your id at every exit!!!

CB

Colin Beaven's presentation would have been better if there were less people, that way we could actually pay attention and listen to what he has to say. All he pretty much did was repeat stories and examples from his book. It seems like no one was really paying attention. I looked around and all I saw was people texting. It took away from the "common" experience (no pun intended) :)
Colin Beaven tells us that we need to focus on what we're doing now to make a difference in the future by conserving all of our goods and resources. If we take a step further, our children's children will have a better place to live than we have right now.

Repetition

Colin Beavan, though fairly interesting on paper, is a significantly less gripping public speaker. As we have all been saying, the majority of what he had to say seemed to be simply repeating the exact stories and examples he used in his book. And though I rather enjoy the irony of us repeating ourselves about his repetition, it was the most significant thing that I noticed about his speach.
That, and the officer that insisted upon taking the time to wave around his flashlight and scoot kids down from the higher seats during the speech. I personally think that if he didn't want people sitting so high, he should have sectioned it off from the beginning, or at least chosen a less distracting way to move so many people.
All in all I like what Colin Beavan has to say, in his book, but hearing it over and over does not seem to strengthen the point but instead water it down, like the more I hear it the less passionate about it I become because it is so routine.

Colin Beaven ):

What to say what to say. Not to sound harsh, but the officer who was shining his flashlight at everyone making them move down so they werent at the top of the bleachers was more entertaining then Colin. It seemed like everything he had to say came RIGHT out of his book. I read the book, I want to hear something different. To tell you the truth, I think I watched the police officer patroling the stands more then I did Colin. He didnt seem to be very engaging and as I looked around I noticed that he was haing a had time keeping the listeners attention. And the one thing that I thought was extremely disrespectful was that in the last ten minutes of he speech, people started moving down the rows to get a better seat near the exit. Then when he was in the middle of saying " Thank you" everyone jumped out of their seats and ran towards the exit. That was extremely rude! There is no reason to disrespect a speaker who took time out of their life to talk to us.
OHH and another thing, they were NOT prepared for the whole scanning the card thing. Remember during PAWS preview when there were two tables with three scanners at each? I do, and this whole one scanner at each exit was not working for me. I wish they had been more prepared, but I guess they will learn for next time. All in all, it was not all I hoped it would be.

Day three

So it looked like everyone had a place to sit in the circle this time, yay! I also really enjoyed some of the readings that were due on that day. The Texas State Traditions was really interesting and I know Im excited for homecomming! Oh and I am deffinitly down for some tree/flower planting if anyone else is. I think it would be a great thing to do as a class and help out with the enviroment while sticking to the common experience theme. I hope yall's weeks went well and EAT'EM UP BOBCATS!

C-Beavz

Got to read "No Impact Man" over the summer and loved it. But the Common Experience presentation- not so much. Like everyone else has been saying, he was a little redundant... /very redundant. And didn't seem like a very strong speaker. I was hoping he'd elaborate more on what's been going on in his life since the project and what's resulted from his book. Also would've liked to hear his input on how we, as individuals, could get involved in No Impact. (But I guess we can talk about that in class, ha)
It was cool being able to see our book's author in person though! Although he was a little repetitive/self-righteous in some parts of the book, I loved how down-to-earth he was. I agree with his message and in the book and also loved how he had a simple, straightforward way of delivering it. And now I gotta go to dinner but I'll see y'all next class! Kbye:)

Mister Madman

Colin Beaven is not a bad guy I just thought his presentation was a bit...boring. Most of the things he mentioned were already in his book, his speech was just an oral presentation of the book. Don't get me wrong it was great seeing the guy in person, but he should have made an effort to talk more outside of his book rather than get his topics straight from the book. OOHHHHH and I really hope we stick with the whole planting idea! Toddles!

Colin Beavan

So I attended Colin Beavan's talk last night, but I did not enjoy it. I went in with an open mind thinking that because I had read the book and sort of knew what he was talking about, I would be interested, but no. I appreciated that he tried to capture our attention and make is more personal by telling stories and talking about his family, but he seemed very self-righteous to me. The one thing that I took away from attending the event was that it is very clear that he is not only passionate about the Earth and about conserving the environment, but also about using what we have to benefit others and make the world as a whole a better place.

Sweet Colin Beavan

I have nothing against the man but I don't agree with most of his views. Like I had said earlier, I'm not concerned with the environment and such so his main topic about that was not really pertaining to me and my interests. We had to of course go to this event and I did but did not enjoy it for a number of reasons. One reason was that the sound system was just horrible! i couldn't hear several things he was saying and two everyone was being so disrespectful and loud talking away, I could hear him even less because of it. I gave up after a while of trying to hear what he was saying. Plus, everything I had heard so far to that point was him talking about things he had already said and pointed out in his book. I know he was really trying to get his point out to us but not everyone is cut out to be a speaker especially when you don't have the right resources.
I did think the diaper being made up of saran wrap was funny though for his daughter.

Class on the 12th and 20th

I have never had so much trouble with an account before in my life! I dont like gmail at all, sorry.
Anyways, the past 2 classes we have had really made me think about several things.
For class on the 12th it really made me think, " Why are you in college?"
I was always raised in a home where I was told I was going to college because there was no better plan than to start off with going to college. I dont disagree with my parents putting that mindset in my life but would I honestly be here if they hadn't in a way forced it on me?
of course though, I want to future my education. My dad is a very well educated man who graduated from UT Austin and who i very much look up to. He is alway feeding me with knowledge everyday I'm with him and I love it! I want to be able to do the same for my children. I want to be able to give them a well and educated answer and not a guess or a lie to sound smart.
Then on the 20th, we discussed about the "no impact week." I personally am not concerned very much with the environment and recylcing but it is interesting so I dont mind doing it for a week. I think I will actually try not to produce trash because I like challenges and I know others will be attempting the same things during this week as well so I'm not alone!

Oh Colin Beavan

I really liked listening to Colin Beavan. At first, after reading the book, I knew he was really worried about the future of our planet, but hearing him talk about how being environmental friendly helped out his family come closer, made him seem much more caring about everyone around him. I enjoyed that he could relate what he was saying to examples that could relate to us now. It was also nice to see how passionate he was talking about ways we can reduce our carbon footprint. Over all, the speech wasn't too shabby and I enjoyed it.

Oh yeah! Melissa and I also discovered that if you have a loft bed and extra hangers, you can hang your clothes under your bed to dry. No drying rack involved, but using one of those isn't a bad idea either, we just haven't asked for one yet! :]

Colin Beavan Common Experience

Colin Beavan discussed alot of issues throughout his presentation. He's mainly worried that a lot of us are not getting involved in these issues that dont seem very serious now, but could become potentially dangerous in the future. Colin is afraid we have this idea that we have to pick between helping the world or helping ourselves and most people choose themselves, but he explains that both can be done at the same time. It was also inspirational that they Beavan family figured out that helping the environment helped their family more than they could imagine. Such as getting organic diapers for Isabella instead of plastic made her much more happy. A little difference, but that's what matters the most. My attendance in recycling, not littering, etc would help out the world and even myself. It may only make a small difference, but it would still make a small change. "In the future when we have so many emergencies in the world, do you want to live in a world where we shoot eachother, or a world where we help eachother around the bases." -Colin Beavan-

Third Day :)

Monday was a pretty fun day. I'm glad we broke up into group and got to discuss the reading. I really like getting in groups because i feel like it gives us all a chance to get to know each other a little better. For our project, i would really like to plant some trees or something where we can get a place. I think it would be really neat to come back to that spot 2 years or so from now and remember that those trees were the ones we built.. and they'll be there for so long and its almost as if it were a permanent memory of freshman year. Thats what i think we should do :) See ya next week!

third day

The third day of class seemed to have a lot more discussion between the students and the prof. The fact that we got toghether in groups made us have a bit more conversation than usual. It seems that the class is going to get more interesting as we continue on into the year. I also wanted to add that because of my Comm. 1310 class on mondays at 5 to 7:50pm im not going to be able to attend the speakers lecture scheduled on monday october, 4. I was emailed that there would be a Video I could watch to get the credit.

Class Today!

Alright, so class today was interesting. I liked the idea of us getting together as a class and doing something. I think if we had a bake sale, that would be a great way to buy trees to plant or something like that.

I really liked discussing the readings too, but I think it's important for us to know where our school traditions come from and how high school learning is different from college.

That's all for now
:]

Third Day

Today's class was interesting because we broke up into groups. I felt like it was a good way for us to discuss things. For our group activity I think planting something or doing an intermural sport would be fun and include everyone in the class. I'm fixing to ask for a drying rack!

Third Class

I enjoyed discussing the Texas State Traditons with my group and hearing all of their different opinions. I also enjoyed the suggestions people had for the group activity. Although I think the painting of a mural sounded the coolest. I also thought the combining of the lunch day and having a picnic near Sewell would be fun.

-Meghan

Third Class

I liked how we broke up into groups. I felt like it was easier to discuss things and get to know one another better. Im more comfortable with a smaller group of people because I am pretty quiet and shy!

Although the video was quite cheesey, I thought it was also cute and helpful. I like the saying "wear the sun" because I think its a cool play on words. I was wondering though, since your clothes would be sitting out in the sun, wouldn't that start to fade your clothes too? Or am I wrong? Just curious!

Chelsea Lovercamp

Our class today

I liked how we split up in groups today. It made it a lot easier to get everybody's input and what they thought on the discussion over Claiming an Education. Also, as a group activity for the class, I really like the idea of the bake sale or hiking, picking up trash and having a picnic.

9/20 class

today in class we watched "Wear the Sun" which taught us that we should hang our clothes to dry instead of using a machine dryer which will be environmentaly friendly. Wednesday we have to go watch Collin Beaven at Strahan Colliseum @ 7:00pm.
our class has to come up with an idea of something we can all do together. during class we discussed planting something (plant/tree), a bake sale, putting on a concert or something in Sewell Park, and painting something.

It's Allergy Season and Test Time!

I had another great day in class with each of you. Thanks for all of your contributions! I know during Hi/Low that many of you are not feeling well, are tired and studying for exams this week. Please remember to take care of yourself. :)

Get plenty of rest, eat well (I know that is hard for a college student), and take your vitamins. Find a study group, if you think the exam is going to be difficult, or even if you are doing well in class and understanding the lectures. It has been proven that if you teach someone, then you are solidifying your mastery of that subject/concept. Additionally, if you are part of a study group, your interaction and discussion with the others in the group can assist with mastery and understanding of the concepts you are learning. There are plenty of students in our class who are in similar classes...find a study buddy! And, don't forget about other resources such as the Writing Lab, SLAC, tutoring, SI instructors, TAs and visiting your professor during his/her office hours for additional assistance.

I can't wait to hear about what you all decide for the group project when we meet next Monday. I'll be reading your thoughts this week on the blog. Have a great week!

9/13 class

I came to college for many reasons. I came to get educated on a certain subject as well as to have the whole college experience. This class helped me realize the difference and help me to have an equal balance of the two. I am looking forward to the next class!!! Love, Brooke.

Day Two :)

So day 2 of our class was pretty good. I enjoyed learning about the gap that Texas is trying to fix. And I like our highs and lows because it helps everyone get a feel of how everyone else's day/week is going. I'm super stressed this week because I have 4 exams, so hopefully this class will be a relief to go to. And I think the new experience papers are interesting too. It makes us get out of our comfort zones so I need that. See all of you tomorrow!

♥ Cheyenne

Experiencial Papers

I must say writing the experience papers were a first of their kind for me. But in a good way. For both of the topics I had actually performed the task without realizing that they were options to write about, so I had a unique perspective. My two were: eating with a strnger, and going to the football game. I must say that both of them were very enjoyable. One having face paint on like you're back in Pre-K and the other talking to an upper classmen for his supreme knowledge. Looking forward to class tomorrow!

SECOND DAY OF CLASS! :)

The second day of class went way better than expected. I really enjoy going around doing all our "highs and lows," it's interesting to see what everyone has to say about their week. I just finished writing my experiential activity papers, they were a lot of fun to try out and I look forward to seeing how the other activities go. I'm looking forward to tomorrow's class, I'm sure we'll have another interesting discussion that will make me think about why we are all here. Hope everyone had an amazing weekend! See you all tomorrow. :)

♥ Jordyn Perez

The Second Day

Class was really interesting on the second day, although I did feel a bit silly about not understanding that the reading was meant to be done before our discussion of the topics and not after. But that's all settled now and I am caught up on my reading and ready to go!

Also the discussion about why we go to college had me thinking for a while, and another point that wasn't really mentioned that is relevant, at least for me, is that I don't feel like I'm ready at this point in my life to go out and begin my career; I feel like college is a necessary step because I would not have been prepared for a career just yet.

Anyways, hope you all had a great weekend!
-Chelsea

day 2.0

So far so good, this class is an interesting experience. I though the discussion about bridging the gap was informative and interesting. I just finished my experiential activities papers and while its homework, they have been fun to do so far and I think they are a good experience. I am enjoying this class so far, the readings in the book too aren't to bad of a read, I still need to read the new ones for this week but I am looking forward to class tomorrow.

First Experiential Papers

Today, I completed my first two experiential activity papers. My topics of choice are "eating alone" and "two days without facebook or twitter." Writing these papers helped me reflect upon a few things that I have learned through small actions. It seems that life is like a novel. Each chapter is important to crafting the collective product into its final form. It would not be the same if it was missing a chapter. What do you all think? Also, what topics did you choose?

DAY 2 of class :D

Well...
Day two was pretty informative , even though I wasnt caught up on the readings. I also didnt expect the lecture type style it was during class, but the disscussion helped!
the US book is pretty neat i espceially enjoyed reding the traditions of Texas State.
Third day of class tomorrow, yay!!
Did anyone catch the game this saturday??? WOOO TXST yuo showed CAL POLLY!!!
Anyways, this blogging thing is pretty neat. Time to go , see you all in class tomorrow!
-Natalie
ps comment if you have a play from the game that was your fav,or even just a fav part of the game odds are I remember it?? :D

Day two

I didn't quite realise we had such a big class until we had set up all the tables in the room and there STILL werent enough for everyone to be in our desk circle. Class seemed to go by pretty quickly but I felt kind of silly for not doing the homework. I didnt realise that the column NEXT to the class date was what was DUE that day. Whoops, I guess I will just have to double up for next class, can't wait to see all you guys there and hear your highs and lows!

Day 2

Second day of class was hectic at first but discussion went well. I didn't plan on being late but I've officially come to the conclusion I hate San Marcos traffic haha Discussion about how college came to be and whyy we're here was interesting. But I must say I think life when women only went to "finishing school" would have been alot easier even if it was unethical. I look forward to Monday's discussion and hopefully the rest of the school goes smoothly!!

day 1 and 2

The first day of class was pretty explanitory, or in other words there was a lot of talk over the syllabus which is how most classes operate.
The second day had more discussion about kind of why were all here at college, but was a little on the boring side because of the lack of involvement.

First Day & Discussion

  • Ok, so it took me a while to figure out how to work this blog, but I got it now. Let's see, the first day was interesting. The whole college atmosphere is a complete transition but I am really excited to see where I can contribute and get involved in.

  • Second day of class brought up some interesting discussions about why I wanted to attend college in the first place. I don't know what I want to do as a career yet but I am slowly gaining a better idea. I am really interested to see what type of person college experiences will shape me into and I hope that it makes me a well rounded person.

I just forgot I had class in ten minutes...better get going.

First day of class was cool. I am ready for everything we are going to learn and the activities we will do. Seems like we will have a lot going on which is good. Already scheduled to go see Colin Beavin! We also won our first home game this weekend! EAT EM UP!

My Experience so far...

Texas State is 3 to 4 hours away from home so theres no going back, without planning first. This helps me really focus on making things work although I seem to be still in a slump. I believe it's just a phase and I know I will soon snap out of it when fall comes around. I believe this kind of behavior is normal when you don't know your way around and your still making friends and its kind of like Jr. High I would say, all over again. No much to complain about when my classes are great, the people are friendly, and the weather... well perfect for floating down the river. lol My questions and confusion is where do I want to fit in and what do I want to do with my life? Of course as freshman, heck if I know! But the college experience is still progressing and I'm sure as time goes on and things get more familiar thats when it'll get easier... other than that its quiet and peaceful in this hill country and that makes me feel at home.

Day Two :)

Today in class we had a pretty crazy discussion. I enjoyed hearing the different reasons why some people attend college. I believe that I am in the group that is going to college for a specific reason. I already know what I want to major in, so i'm kinda just taking the core classes they're telling me to just so I can get to the benificial stuff for my major. I also think that the experimental activities is pretty neat. I'm glad i've already done two and i can just write a quick page for each. :) I'm hoping for good things to come out of this class and I cant wait to see all of you on Monday!!! :)

Why am I here?

Today definitely made me think about why I'm even here. When I first started the whole college searching process, I knew I wanted more out of college than just going to class, doing well on a test and going back home. That is why I decided on a four year university. I am looking forward to how my college years will mold and shape me into the person I will become. I think that I have so much to learn about people, places and points of view that differ from my own and I look forward to becoming a more well rounded person.

Thinking

Class was pretty interesting today. The discussion about why people actually go to college and what they perceive it to be was informative. I think I'm in the group of people who see it as a vocational learning opportunity and a way to broaden my knowledge about other things and experience new things. I like how I already have 2 experiential activities done, not using an elevator and going to a Bobcat football game. I also went to the volleyball game against Prairie View A&M. I feel like this semester will be very interesting and memorable. I am looking forward to what the future has in store for me.

Importance

Today was, indeed, the second day in class, and the thinking has already begun. We are thinking about a question I wonder if we have all asked ourselves: why are we here? I personally can say that being here was the next logical step. Who would want to ask the famed quote "would you like fries with that" the rest of their lives? Certainly not me. Once here though the question is put infront of you: BUT why are you here? Is it money? Is it social life? Is it expected? Are you simply lost on the road of life? For each of us there is a unique answer. If put to a poll in th Quad I am confident that the results would probably all be closer to one answer. Money. So if that is the case the reason for being at college is money. But what if someone told you that if you promiss to never partake in the "college experience" they would garentee you a comfortable life. Would you take their offer? Or would you take the chance that somewhere at this "college" you could find more than just a comfortable life.

That is my monologue on todays class. Take it as you will.

First reflection on US 1100

University Seminar 1100 is not only a new class, but a different classroom experience for me. Things may look fairly simple at first, but let us choose not to look only with the eyes.

As of today, the seating in the classroom was arranged in a "U" formation, thus encouraging students to share their ideas with one another, as well as possibly take some newly presented perspectives into consideration. A sensation of relaxation floats within the air of the classroom, for we are working without the need of work. We are exercising our brains and possibly do not realize it as it takes place. As I watch the class in session, I feel as if we shall be much more close by the end of this semester of college.

Cheers to all!

Second Day! :D

Class today was interesting; it sure made me think a whole lot. Not only are we the change that the our beautiful state of Texas needs, but we're also the future. The gap situtation we were discussing today made me realize not only am I getting an education for myself but I'm helping Texas get situated. As we discussed, we need more students in general to get a higher education for the reason that today we don't have as many students waking up and smelling the coffee. It sure feels great contributing to the change. See you all next Monday! :)

Second Class

I thought the two reasons people usually go to college for was interesting to think about. How some people go to learn things for their future job, some go for not only that but also the "college experience," and of course some are in between. I thought about it, and I'd have to say I'm on the side of going just so I can learn how to become an exceptional therapist. I don't have a huge interest in joining clubs or organizations or even getting the whole "college experience" really. I would love it if I could go to college and only take psychology classes and go home. I'm just more interested in taking my psychology courses, then getting into graduate school, then hopefully getting a job as a counseling therapist. But, since college has been made into so much more than just going for your future job, I might as well participate in things that add up to be the "college experience" since im here already.

Second Class

I thought the "Grading your Professors" essay was quite interesting. It made me think about my professors and how I would grade them. I would say most of them are B professors, although some may fall under the C category. The author of this piece makes a really good point about how the professors should be passionate about what they teach and want to help the students become passionate as well. I know when I have a professor and they show excitement in a particular area, I'm more likely to pay attention and improve my grade.

What is the Purpose of Higher Education?

Great class today! I was happy to see all of you, after our Labor Day Holiday last week. I look forward to reading your thoughts on the blog this week about the purposes of higher education.

Good luck on your exams and homework assignments! See you next Monday.

The First Day

I figured posting about the first day the morning before the second would be fitting, sort of in anticipation for the next class. The first day was great! Very relaxing and not quite as long as the other classes which was nice. I've already started taking tests and becoming swamped in homework for other classes (that's what I get for taking 17 hours I suppose). But I'm still very excited about college in general and it's going great so far. I'm looking forward to our last day when we go on the glass bottom boat tour because it sounds really interesting.

See you all in class today!

Hey :)

So, the first day of class was super awesome. I love that this is going to be a chill time that we still get a grade for. It seems like we're all going to have really interesting conversations and hopefully we will all get to know each other really well. I'm sooo excited about the glass bottom boat ride! and the Common experience things sound pretty neat too. I am currently in my hometown for this long labor day weekend/my mom's birthday! It was nice to come home and enjoy my huge comfy bed that i've been missing so much! And seeing family was really good too. But, I'm ready to come back to San Marcos and start this new 3 day week of mine! See you guys a week from tomorrow!

Primer Dia de Clase

I really enjoyed the first day of US Seminar. I'm looking forward to this class because I know it will be one of my easier classes this semester which is much needed. I liked how we took the time to go over the syllabus and made sure that we knew exactly what is going on throughout the year. Class was very relaxing and fun compared to all my other classes! I hope that we are open to all kinds of conversations that allows us to get to know each other a little better. All the activities planned for extra points seem pretty interesting, the other day we all ate lunch with someone new, Logan. It was a lot of fun! Can't wait to see what the rest of the class has to offer. :)

first dayy

So class was fun and a lot easier than others for US, thank god. I'm glad we went over everything and professor Lopez made sure we actually understood what was going on in class this semester. The rest of my classes haven't been too shabby either mainly a ton of homework in English and Math though so it's a bummer. Going home this weekend to visit the family and enjoy my three days off, see y'all a week from Monday :)
