My Mint Plant

My mint plant has been something I was looking forward to have grown in my dorm room but it has still not grown any. When I got my pot, painted it, put the soil and the seeds in it i was super excited about the possible plant inside my room. I have watered and also have given it sunlight so it can grow but still nothing but i will not give up and keep doing what i am doing so maybe there will be some growth.

In class today we had our own little picnic, where each of us would bring something to eat. It was a great way to have the class do something together and let us talk about what we are thankful for. I was thankful for my family and friends back home and also for the friends I have met here at Texas State. Hope everyone has a wonderful Thanksgiving break and I am so glad that I will be going home.

this was the first day of the autobiography presentations. i got to know a lot more about my classmates. There are a lot of interesting people in our class that i would love to get to know better, i found out more about people and where they are from! i had never been in Boko's Living Room before this it seemed like a really nice place to relax and get some rest!! i could really use some sleep so maybe sometime i will go chill in there with all the other people!

the first day of class we made name plates so Mrs. Lopez could get to know us. she told us about the experiential activities we have to do. I am glad this class is on a monday so we can start the week out great! Mrs. Lopez told us about how Colin Beaven will be ccoming to speak to us about his book that we read over the summer. I thought it would be really interesting to see how his life has changed a year later after writing it.

Lunch/plant progress

todays class was really good we ate a lot of non-healthy food! everyone brought something for lunch. we discussed what we were thankful for during hi/low's. i am thankful for meeting so many great people my first semester of college! i cant wait to go home this week for thanksgiving...i miss all of my family and friends a lot! it will be a much needed break!

my plant is not growing at all! I hope it will soon cause i really want some fresh mint!

Class Lunch

So today we had our wonderful lunch in the classroom. It was fun just eating horribly greasy yet delicious food and talking about what we are thankful for. :) I hope this week at home feels longer than just 5 days...I'm more than ready for this break and I can't wait to catch up on sleep. I can't wait to see all of my family and eat lots and lots of home cooked food. I'm so sick of Jone's. I hope everyone has a safe drive (or flight) home and back.

Update on my Plant

Well if you noticed in melissa's blog, she posted pictures of our plants that have still not grown much, but I have hope! I talk to my plant everyday. Sometimes in spanish...I just want it to hear encouraging things. I named it Riley, well actually this girl in my hall did, but I liked the name. I hope it'll grow sometime soon and I think I'm going to take it home during break so it gets water. More updates to come!

Picnic

The picnic today was fun! It was nice having a class where we just talked and ate! All the food people brought was really good. Not very healthy, but hey it's not going to kill us! (:

I've been watering my plant everyday still. I am really hoping it sprouts soon! I hope I did not some how accidently kill it. I am going to bring it home with me over Thanksgiving Break so it wont die while I am gone.

The US 1100 Meal

Today's class was a nice change of activity, for we devoured several "Stoner Pies," in addition to all of the food that my classmates and I brought. I cannot find much to say about class today. It was nice to hear what my classmates are excited about and thankful for. I hope that everyone going somewhere for the holidays has a safe trip there and back.

PICNIC...sort of

I really enjoyed our little class picnic today, although it wasn't much of a picnic really because 1) we were inside and 2) we were sitting in chairs. Any how, Im really glad we kind of wrapped up our time together doing something fun that everyone could get involved in.

In class that week, we talked about what the common experience was going to include for the semester and we went over the syllabus. What the activities meant, the glass-bottom boat ride, our class project and our autobiographies.

The week of 15-22

So many things going on, images swirling, swords twirling, formulas dancing, chaos. This was my week. I have a hard time knowing what day it is from one to the next in my chaotic blur. Doing homework through tomorrow, or is it today; maybe yesterday?

For class we were supposed to bring food of some kind to share as a collective group. Keith and I decided to go to the HEB Plus in Kyle. We decided on bringing cheeses and little sausages. I chose to bring the cheese and crackers. For these I chose extra sharp chedder (because they didnt have smoked chedder) and veggie crackers. It was good.

As for a quick Amtgard update: We had a goblin battle for our shire against a group of goblins which should have been easy to kill but sadly our Shire was over run by goblins, we all died. (For those who think I'm talking about a board game I'm actually talking about a role-playing sport called Amtgard, and the people who were goblins litterally out numbered us and we all lost all our lives).

It is funny how such a simple project can suddenly reveal some complexity. I signed up to bring an appetizer for our class' "picnic." One simple question came to mind: "What should I cook?"

I was promptly bombarded with billions of bite-sized options, lightly tugging at my pants' leg and screaming, "PICK ME PICK ME!"

After an expedition through the mostly-edible jungle of H-E-B, I found myself atop a revelation. SMOKEY SAUSAGES! These juicy, little snacks are an excellent choice for an appetizer, when prepared correctly for the correct entree. In my opinion, these sausages should go incredibly well with a "stoner pie," the holy grail of pizza from Gumby's Pizza. It is topped with pepperoni, bacon, mozzarella sticks, and french fries!

I hope that my class likes smokey sausages, for I bought many!

Plant Update

It seems that most of my University Seminar class has had no noticeable progress with their plants' growth; Mine is no exception.

I have watered my plant about once or twice each day, having placed it next to my room's window for a light source. Additionally, it is next to the air conditioning unit without being constantly assaulted by the cold air it exhales. This provides vibrations which should, in theory, stimulate plant growth.

It is beyond me as to why this plant is hiding from this beautiful, beautiful world.

Class Lunch-In

Today was really fun :] I enjoyed getting to eat during class because usually I am hungry during this class anyway. I struggled to make my dessert last night since we don't have a full kitchen, but I was inventive and found a way to make my cookies. I didn't really like the stoner pie pizza, well it was alright, but the french fries on top were a different experience. I hope everyone has a great thanksgiving and we're almost done with the semester! Yayyy!

Picnic/ Plant

I wasn't in class today, but I heard it was fun. Sorry I missed out. Since I wasn't there, I can't talk about whatever you did talk about, so I'm gonna talk about my plant. It sprouted! I'm excited that I didn't end up killing it. It's a tiny sprout but it's definitely there. I've been watering it once a day and it doesn't get too much sunlight. I'm going to keep this up and hopefully it'll grow even taller. :)

So our time in Boko's living room was interesting. I loved getting to know a little about everyone and where they came from. We have so many different people in our class and I only have a hand full of them in my other classes so it was great getting to know them better and started talkin more in other classes. I got lost the first dayy on my dayy to Boko's living room and had to ask for directions but I found it perfectly fine the second dayy. I didnt even know that whole section behind Blimpies existed before presentations haha well i hope yall are all having a great week!

So going back through the blog I realized Mrs. Lopoez was right and I am missing blogs... gotta love when things dont post when you think they do. So makin up for our second class meeting after labor day... We had a few readings that were due that dayy and our class talked about getting a college degree and what the importance of a degree is now a days. I came to college because there was never really any question I would get a degree but honestly in order to get a decent job one must have a college degree.

last weeks talk about what everyone had going on was kinda nice cuz i realized i wasnt alone with all my tests and whatnot. i look forward to our class meeting today with all of our food. jordan, sagar and i were all down in the 2nd floor kitchen this mornin cookin away and it smelled really good :) thanksgiving is right around the corner and i cant wait for a good homecooked meal.

Last Class- November 15th

so last class we talked about leadership and what it means to us. we also talked about if we think if we are leaders and by the end of the semister we all hope to feel as though we are leaders. we talked about the lunch and how we are going to meet in the classroom and then go outside and eat lunch somewhere else. thats all!

My Mint!!

So I am extremely proud of my baby (my mint plant) and I can finally say that I saw a tiny little leaf sprout this weekend!! See you all tomorrow at our cute little family lunch =)

Plant Progress

My plant does not seem to be growing well, but I am continuing to water it and see if I can get it to grow at all. There just is not too much sun, but on a positive note I am ready for our lunch in class tomorrow!

Also, I had no idea we were planting the plants this night :( I really feel like I missed out and I hope I can make it up... Another thing that was said in this lecture was who was bringing what for the picnic on 11/22. I can bring something, I just didn't sign up!!! I will bring something, i pwomise!

We met in BOKO's living room once again to see presentations. I think it's cool that we have a place like that on campus that students can just come in to a quiet place and relax (and even take a nap). I enjoy learning about my classmates! Most of their life stories are quite interesting. I can't wait to present my presentation on 11/29. I heard that most people painted their pots but I have no idea where my plant/pot is... I never picked it up. hopefully that can be changed!

We went to BOKO's living room to hear autobiography presentations. They are quite interesting!! I like hearing about people's childhood and high school experiences. Usually I can tell if people are well-acclimated to college yet by what tone of voice they talk about their home in.

I was not present in this class, but I heard it was pretty confusing, so I don't think I missed much. Mad props to Cheyenne for really stepping up. She really shows some leadership qualities!! I think the project the class ended up doing was a great sustainability project! Yay for mint plants! hopefully they are native to Texas, because it wouldn't be very sustainable if we planted invasive plants on our campus!

We did not have class this day, so I believe we were supposed to write about sustainability week. I checked out the farmer's market and bought some extremely fresh okra (one of my faves), didn't use any elevators, and didn't use Styrofoam. I think that sustainability is a great theme to have for this academic school year. I assume that the latest "green" craze is in response to the recent attention given to global warming. Anyways, I felt much better about myself, and my impact on this earth.

Unfortunately, I was not able to come to the career services lecture. However, I already know what I want to do, career-wise. I would like to get a degree in Wildlife Biology from Texas State University, then hopefully travel and study some more, find some kind of research job. Then I want to go back to school and eventually settle down and become a zoo veterinarian and have a family of my own. That's the plan! I'm hoping I can make a decent salary, but if not, I know I will be working with animals, so I will be happy.

The SLAC presenter was pretty helpful! I didn't know that if you suck on peppermints, it's easier to remember things. Although, it does make sense if you think about it. You would associate that fact or study material with the taste of a peppermint. I think? Anyways, I thought it was helpful to hear some nice study tips, even though I had heard most of them before.

on the 20th, we discussed about the "no impact week." we heard some creative ideas about how to conserve energy and be less harsh on the environment. An idea I liked was hanging your clothes up on a line instead of putting them in a dryer. I liked our ideas for our group project! It's already been decided and done with that we plant mint plants. I think it's great what we are doing for the environment by introducing some nice oxygen producers!!

Labor day?

Class 11/15 and plant

The subject of this class was leadership. It is important to know the qualities of a leader. A good leader has an exemplary character. It is of utmost importance that a leader is trustworthy to lead others. A leader needs to be trusted and be known to live their life with honestly and integrity. A good leader “walks the talk” and in doing so earns the right to have responsibility for others. True authority is born from respect for the good character and trustworthiness of the person who leads.

I have yet to see my plant :( I wish I could have seen it before it was planted!!! Maybe to make up for it, I could buy my own plant and do the whole thing myself instead of with the group. I will have to see what I can do.

So my plant is not growing just like pretty much everyone else in class. Hopefully it starts growing soon. Collin Beaven

After reading his book, I had some respect for this man for pursuing a cause that he fully believed in. I felt the emotions he did as I read his book. He rose up to the challenge at hand that is human consumption and tried to find a way to help it's effect on the environment. He seemed like a noble character with many leadership qualities. However, seeing him on stage made me think otherwise. I thought he would be inspiring students to act, but he was merely talking about his own experiences. I suppose in his own way, his experiences did inspire students, but I fully expected him to engage the students and encourage them to find their own way to help Earth and it's inhabitants, but it just wasn't the case. I felt very disappointed after watching him speak, and I don't think I've ever seen so many phone screens out in rows in front of me during a presentation.

My mint plant wont grow ):

and its really annoying me. Ive talked to it, watered it, and left it in the window to get some sun but not too much. I am not really sure if I am just impatient or what but I am pretty excited to have a plant in my room. I am also stoked about this whole picnick thing. I will be making cookies... or brownines... or something that I can actually make in that tiny little "kitchen" we have in Laurel. If anyone has something that they would REALLY like me to bring let me know and ill see what I can do. If not, just deal with cookies!

My Mint Plant

Well I have yet to see any progress with my mint plant. It is kind of sad because I was really exciting to have a plant in my room. I always wanted real flowers and tried to convince Melissa but she's pretty sure we'd kill them and I know eventually I would... so we got rid of that idea. I have been watering my plant and showing it some sun light, but that could be the problem. I really don't know. I'm excited for our lunch because I am making cookies and I like to cook :] or bake in this case.

Well, i've been watering my plant everyday and nothings come up yet, except, one of my seeds come through to the top of the soil and it looks like a yellow/ green ball. I re-dug a whole for it and covered it back up with soil. I hope I did everything right for my plant.

PLANTING!!

So I was excited about planting from the very beginning. I've been saying that I wanted a plant in my dorm room for forever and now I'm glad that I have one. Before we planted our mint, I have some fake flowers because I though I would kill real ones, so we'll see how well my mint does. haha

so this was the day that we went and visited the career center. I really enjoyed how nice the lady was that talked to us. She genuinel semeemed to care about her job and the students who went and got help from her. The colorful handouts about the different majors offered here were really helpful. I read through the one about psychology because at the time I wasn't sure if I should change my major or not and it was very reassuring. I'm glad we got the chance to see what career services was all about and I will definitely go see them if I need help.

So thinking back to the first day of class, all I remember was be nervous...probably because I was nervous about everything dealing with school then. haha

I know that I was excited to have a class with all freshman because I wouldn't feel dumb if I had a question. I was also glad that I was going to have a fairly easy class compared to some of my others... poli sci...

Going into it, I had no idea why I was even required to take a seminar class or what we would be doing, but now I can see its benefits.

Im glad class was productive this week! I love doing the highs and lows! In my high school, we used to have this class called teen leadership and we did that every day.. I loved that class :) Sooo the status on my mint plant is umm how can i put this, not alive i guess? Its not growing and i water it every day and sometimes twice a day! I keep it in my window so the sun shines on it but i just dont understand :( I wish there was some magical way i could convince it to grow! Oh well, Also, I cant wait for our picnic think next week! It'll be a ton of fun! But i would perfer to have it inside because it'll be cold and we wont have to deal with bugs and stuff (gross)! And i'm glad the boat trip was settled because I was worried about my class at 9 when the syllabus said it was during then! Cant wait! :)

leadership

In class this week, we talked about leadership. Its hard for me to see myself in a leadership position here at Tx State because there are so many people and its easy to just get involved but then fade into the background. In high school I can come up with about a dozen times when I was a prominant leader, but now its not so easy. I think that one thing we discussed that was important was how you can be a leader without necessarily holding a position. Leaders are more than just their title, they are the people who we look up to a role models and look up to.

Class and plant progress

My plant does not seem to be going good. It is not growing so much, but there is not much you can do when it is 50 degrees outside. Hopefully I will see some progress sooner rather than later. I am ready for our class lunch becuase I always get really hungry in class, so that is a plus!

Class 11/15

Today in class we talked on the topic of leadership which was interesting because sometimes we can take good leaders for granted, but I wish we would have touched on the subject of Bad Leaders more. Leadership intrests me because most of the time we seem to highlight leaders failures and short coming when they may have just had so much to take care of, like in the case of George Bush.

Plants & Class

Today, class was pretty fun! I really enjoyed being able to hear everyone's highs and lows of the week. That's my favorite part about class. :) Our discussion on leadership really got me thinking. It has never really occurred to me that you can be a leader without having an official position. YAY for learning new things. I would like to take on a leadership role sometime this year, I think that could help me grow as a person and prepare me for life after college. I don't know about any of you, BUT my plant isn't growing at all. Maybe tomorrow I will see cute little sprouts of mint emerging from the soil. Cool to think about. What else? Our class+lunch on the 22nd=AWESOMENESS. I cannot wait to cook pizza rolls for everyone. It's my best dish. Okay. I'm now rambling on about nothing because I'm in the library bored out of my mind. Hopefully you all are having a better night. Oh yeah, sleepy time yeah.

Mint Plant Progress

So my plant isn't making any progress. It's kind of sad...but I water it frequently. Maybe a little too much. Hopefully it will sprout soon. I didn't think about the ride home until Meghan wrote about that on the blog. I also have a 3 1/2 to 4 hour car ride home for Thanksgiving. That should be interesting... But even if the plant doesn't ever sprout, I enjoyed the painting and the planting.

Class 11/15 Topic: Leadership

Today class was pretty good. At first, we did highs and lows which is cool. It breaks the ice and opens us up for casual conversations between all of us on topics we are all dealing with. Then we went on to discuss what was on the syllabus, once again. I feel like that takes a huge chunk out of our class time, but I suppose some people aren't used to being responsible for something that's not reiterated to them on multiple occasions. Given, the boat ride time was wrong, so that probably should have only been the circumstance in which we would discussed the syllabus since the first day. But whatever, I guess the semester is almost over so it doesn't matter. I enjoyed our leadership discussion. It was interesting to see what everyone else thought were important qualities in a leader. See you all at our lunch next week =)

11/15

I am glad we got out boat tour sorted out today in class because the time was wrong on our syllabus. I am hoping it will not be too cold out on the boat that day nor on the 22nd when we have our picnic type thing. We talked about leadership today in class, it was interesting I suppose we talked about different ways that you can be a leader with out knowing about it really. I missed class the week before because I didn't feel well so I am going to have to present my biography another day because even though I actually signed up and was prepared on my day we ran out of time.

Mint plant

We planted out mints plants last sunday, My pots rather cute looking. I have been watering it every couple days and its sitting in my window so I hope it will grow. I am not to great with plants I already killed one of my plants so I am hoping this one will grow and actually live to some thing decent. I thought I had almost all my blogs done, but apearantly nottt so I am going to go back through and look at them I guess and re post for them.

11/15 class

Today during class we went over our highs/lows. Then we discussed the boat tour that is december 6th and our picnic that is next monday! I am excited about our picnic, I hope that we have nice weather so we can sit outside and have a good time! We had a great discussion in class today about leadership. most of the class didnt raise their hands when Ms. Lopez asked if we are leaders. i fwe really think about it, i think we can all come up with a way that we have been leaders during our first semester of college. I have been a leader in my english class when i had to lead a class discussion. Well I am really looking foward to our next class together!!!!

Todays Class

We finally went over everyones highs and lows which is something we have not done in a while, so that was pretty fun. My plant does not seem to be growing so I do not know what is up with that, but I guess ill try watering it more. Today was a good discussion on leadership which is a quality that not everyone pocesses becuase leadership is everyones own definition of someone who takes control. Hopefully I can become more of a leader this semester.

No Class= September 6th...

I have no idea if we were suppose to blog for the class we missed during labor day but here it is since I can't find the other two blogs I missed...

Labor day was cool, I got to see our football team play against U of H since I live close to Houston. It was nice to see my family and my best friend since she stayed at home to go to a local college. It was nice to slowly transition but I was ready to leave as soon as I got to be home for a day because I felt like I should be home.

I don't know what class number we're on but today was a good class as usual. I liked hearing everyone's highs and low's because we haven't done that in a while. I am ready for a break, like everyone else. But we only have 7 more days after today! :] I have one more test this week and then regular class as usual so that's not too stressful.

Along the lines of our discussion, I don't think I have been a leader once this semester, but I was never really one in high school either. Well I was captain of the soccer team, but I never had to be forceful or yell, I pretty much did what I knew what was expected and did what I wanted to. We'll see how the rest of the year goes and whether or not I become a leader...

11/15/10 and updates about my mint plant

So today we shared our highs and lows which is always fun and then we talked mainly about what it means to be a leader and what is leadership. I think everyone has had a leadership part at some part of their life some parts may seem bigger to others or more important but that doesn't really matter. Being a leader is so much more than having a high position in student council or being head of something. I agreed with the class when discussing that. There are so many opportunites everyday that students at Texas State can take advantage of to lead others but its up to us to take that stand.

My mint Plant
Sadly, I have not seen much of any growth on it so far. My plant is in a smaller pot than everyone elses and I recieved the same amout of seeds as the people who recieved a much larger pot than me. That could be a possible reason why my plants arent growing since they are crowded into a tiny pot. I'm not at all sure of how to take care of plants except doing the basics such as watering which I only do once a day since I do have a much smaller pot and less soil than everyone. I'm sure it will grow soon though.

I thought it would be sort of cool to hear Mr. Beaven talk, but he wasn't that great of a speaker. He was repetitive in his speech, his microphone was not on loud enough, so I could barely even hear what he was saying anyways, and everybody in the Gym were really loud. I was also near the top of the coliseum, so it made hearing him even harder. In short, I was a little disappointed of his speech. His book is not that bad, though.

Leadership

Hey Guys,

I'm really glad we got the time for the glass-boat ride all cleared up because I wasn't sure I was going to be able to go and now that I now I can, I'm really excited about it. I think it will be really interesting. Also, our talk about leadership was really great today. It was nice hearing everybody's view on what a leader is and all the different ways you can be a leader.

My Mint Plant

I've been opening my blinds every other day for it to get some sunlight. I've also been watering it when I remember. I'm afraid I might water it too much, because my "pot" (an empty orange juice bottle) doesn't have a hole in the bottom. After spending money on this plant, it better grow. If not, I will be very disappointed. I just realized I'm going to have to carry this plant with me during my 3 hour car ride home for Thanksgiving. hmm

Today in class was about the review of what is happening this coming weeks of school and we started it out with our high and lows for the week. I am excited about the picnic and the boat ride that we will be doing next week.Leadership was one of the topic we were discussing today and leadership doesn't have to be a title and could be a person just seeing something that needs to be done and taking the bull by its horns. There are ways to get involved and become a leader in the school and you just have to look around. I am super excited about Thanksgiving break to see the family and eat lots of food and not have to worry about school just for a couple of days. My plant has been getting plenty of sunlight and water and nothing is happening but I know it will soon and I am super thrilled!

Colin Beavin

So this is a way late post, but better late than never. I don't think Colin Beavin visiting really had an effect on Texas State. He just restated what was in his book. I was expecting to at least gain some knowledge that I hadn't already known. That didn't happen. Also, lots of students were being rude and talking and were only there to get credit for Seminar class. Although, if they were paying attention I think his speech would have still had the same effect: not much of one.

Today's Class

I enjoyed doing highs and lows today. We hadn't done in them in awhile. I'm also glad we got the times for the boat tour cleared up. I was afraid I wouldn't be able to go. Now I know that I can. :) I've been a leader in the past during high school when I was in Color Guard, but this year, I'm not sure I have been. Leadership to me is taking charge of something without being assigned to do it. Ex: Cheyenne.
Well I'm off to go make up my blog about Colin Beavin. I didn't know we had to blog specifically about him. Off I go!

The 8th of November

I am making up the 8th of November post: also in present tense.

Today we discussed diversity. It was interesting seeing all the different opinions on whether it is good or bad. I personally voted good. We are going to be planting out plants tonight at ten o'clock in laurel, should be pretty fun. We also discussed the picnic that is coming up in a couple of weeks. I decided that I would bring an appetizer. Haven't decided what yet, but I am a pretty good cook so who knows maybe I'll cook something.

Amtgard update: Saturday we went to End Reign. We say the new king of the Celestial Kingdom get crowned and we were introduced to the rest of Amtgard for the first time. All I can say is after that war I am in pain.

The 25th

Making up for the 25th blog post: also in present tense.

Today we went to Boko's living room and listened to several peoples autobiographies, including mine. I told everyone about my past, where im from ect., and I talked about the influences on my coming to Texas State and how I felt. I think I did pretty good all things considered. The rest of the presentations were insightful as well. I especially liked the ones that were made by hand.

Update for Amtgard: I have started work on making my armor. I am using 16 Oz. leather which I have dyed and I am going to braid the pieces together into a body, vambraces, and chaps. I hope it goes well.

The 18th

I am making up the 18th Blog here and im going to put it in present tense so as to not confuse myself.

So for class today we all met in the Boko's living room to hear peoples autobiographies. there were many different back grounds and plans for the future. It is clear that we are all from different places, although exactly where is not entirely known unless you ask. Many of the people who presented said that they were not planning on staying at Texas State for the whole of their college careers, which is an interesting deciscion.

On another note this is the week that I was nominated and voted on to become the Regent of the local Amtgard Shire. If anyone wants more details try to find me in person so as to not spam.

Make Up Blog Class One

I had trouble finding which class I did not blog about and I think I put two classes in one blog which did not count so I'll talk about the first class day again.

The first class day I was nervous because although I had gone to my class already, I did not know what to expect for this one. I wasn't sure how to describe the class U.S. seminar to my other friends who went to different schools, but after talking to my friend D'Laney who goes to UT she seems to have a similar class just over a really specific topic, that is sort of like our common experience here. Overall the first day of class was fun and I was excited to see what type of group project we would come up with.

I forgot to blog about it after we went and heard him speak, so I'll do that now!

Okay so, needless to say I was really disappointed. I went back and read what other people said and they felt the same way I did.

One thing I really did not like was the fact that he kept telling us stories and stuff that were in his book. I know the reason why he was talking was because of his book, but we've already read his book! Why would we want to hear the same stories we've already read? I was expecting some new stories or updates or even what he used as toilet paper! Ha ha.

Just about the only thing I did like about him being there was when he said his daughter is doing okay. In the book, when they had those scares with her, I actually kind of teared up. It was really sad. I was so glad to hear that she is doing okay.

Leadership/Plants

Leadership is a very important thing in our society. There are bad leaders and good leaders. Unfortunatly, sometimes people follow the bad leaders, whether they know they are bad or not. For example, I think Hitler was a leader. A very BAD leader...but still people followed him. People follow other people very easily, so I think it is important for us to be careful of who we are following.

As for the planting thing, I'm eager for it to sprout! After giving money for the materials, painting the pot, and planting the seeds I am looking forward to seeing some seeds sprout up. I have been watering it once a day, or when the soil feels dry. I don't want to over water it. I have also been opening my blinds every day, not much sunlight gets in but I think that is good because I don't think it is supposed to have much sunlight. Hopefully something comes up soon!

Leadership

I liked our discussion in class over leadership. It's an important quality to obtain, especially for someone in my position. My position is in the Army National Guard and so it is my duty in many cases to not just be a good follower but a good leader. Since I am quite fresh my job doesn't stress the leadership role too much yet but thats what my purpose in the ROTC is specifically to learn leadership. At first its scary to take charge you want to be the role model your suppose to be but your only human you still make mistakes. It's those who bounce back from the mistakes are the ones who will make good leaders. I always told myself if you can swallow your pride and put your self on the line to admit what you did wrong people will admire you just for that exact reason. Leaders admit to when they need help even if the are normally the helpful ones. Great Class discussion I actually started writing this blog in class cause it couldn't wait. :)

Plant and Aquarena Center Educational Tour

Plant progress: I have been watering my plant 1-2 times a day, but I am not sure if that is a safe amount. I will probably just "google it."

Additionally, I feel that the Aquarena Center Educational Tour is not set at the best time. This is because someone posted that much of the class seems to be unavailable at that time. I would be available at that time, but I class at 10am. Perhaps we can sort this problem out in class today.

Only like 4 more weeks!!

Last week's class was interesting. I liked talking about diversity seeing that there are many diverse people in my life. Hearing the story about the group of black guys talking trash about white girls rreally kindof offended me because I'm in an interracial relationship and if I would have heard them talking I would deffinately of said something. I'm looking forward to today's class and everything we'll get to talk about. My plant is doing well but I cant tell if it's growing yet haha I named it chocolate chip like mint chocolate chip i know really original. well see you all in a bit!!

Planting Our Mint Plants
It was a good turnout at Laurel Hall Lobby when we all went to start to plant a new life of mint.
I hope that everyone's plant lives a long life and that our project is a success for all.
It was a little dirty with the soil and even with the newspaper I still somehow managed to make a mess but it was all worth it in the end.

11/8/10 Class
Our class discussion was very interesting today. It was about how our nation sees and views diversity. Some people embrace diversity and see it as a positive impact and others see it negatively and some even see diversity as being neutral like myslef. I see it as neutral because good things and bad things come to my mind when diversity comes up. I see people being hurt and discriminated and left outcasted because of where their background is and where their family comes from.
Then I see people growing in understanding and growing in friendships and accepting more of others of their cultures and such by helping move our country forward. We read 3 different selections about diversity. One that my group read was about a gay guy who feels discriminated by his sexuality. Our class made some points of how diversity plays a role in our world in different ways.

Autobiographies Day 2
Today was the second day of only autobiographies at Boko's Living Room at LBJ. It was nice knowing where people came from and their views and decisions about keeping the earth green. Even though I still didn't get to present, I hope I do as well and a good of a job as everyone in my class did today.

Autobiographies Day1
Today was the very first day where people get to present their presentations of mainly powerpoints to the class about their lives and their views about sustainability. I got several ideas from some people of how to be sustainable. Next week we will continue to present our autobiographies and I hope to learn more about my peers. We also are still in the process with our class project getting closer. Also, we discussed today about our class lunch we will be having together soon. I personally wouldn't mind getting some pizza.

Class Project
In class we mainly talked and discussed a big chunk about our class project and how we are going to set it up on our own as a class. We finally came down to the decision in class of planting a plant in front of Laurel Hall.
I don't really notice the landscaping of many buildings but I would'nt mind if something was done to Laurel or at least helped to make it look better. And knowing I was part of planting something there will always be there for my memory. The majority of us came together in the lobby of Laurel last night and came down to the nitty gritty details of our class project. The cost is pretty low so im pretty happy about that.

Im blogging about the mint plant I planted :( iv yet to see any progress I sure hope it didnt die.
Oh and on a side note , we need to discuss why the boat tour is not suring our classtime. More than half the class if not all of the students in class have classes at nine and would be unable to make it to the boat tour. I find this rediculously unfair consindering we have been waiting and looking forward to this trip all year long only to find out we cannot go???

Plants and Diversity

First off: planting. last monday we all got together around ten in laurel and planted. We all devided into groups of five (or tried too) and together put dirt into our painted pots, then we put some seeds into the dirt. I have been watering mine on a decent schedule so as to not flood it. But alas there is no plant yet of course.

In our last class we also talked about diversity. There were several reading about diversity which gave light to some different sides of diversity. One question came up: is diversity a good thing. I believe that the fact that there is even a concept of diversity is what causes all the different racial problems and the like. What I mean is why can't we just be different people together? Why do we have to be diverse? Diversity is a good thing. But how long are we going to be diverse before the diversity is the norm and the idea of diversity dies away? We are all human and that should be enough.

Diversity

In our last class, we discussed the topic of diversity. This topic has mixed opinions regarding various things about it, such as whether or not diversity is good.

Diversity can be like a double-edged sword. It is good in the sense that diversity often promotes understanding and interesting new ideas. However, it is also bad in that diversity can become the grounds for possibly violent adaption processes for those who are not used to today's diversity.

This topic made me think of how far the United States has come in racial equality since the slave trades. Who, back then, would have thought that we would one day have a black president? :) Regardless of whether or not one likes our current president, I keep in mind that it is an amazing feat to have come this far in racial equality.

Planting!

So we have finally planted our seeds and so far nothing has happened to mine ): I know its a little to soon to hp[e that anything will grow but a girl can dream. I am kind of excited about having a plant in my room. I used to garden with my mother all the time back home so its like taking a little peice of that to college with me. I hope mine sprouts soon!

We finally planted the other day, it was pretty cool and easy. This picnic idea that we have looks like it's going to be good. Class was interesting because I liked our discussion about diversity in society and if people think its negative or positive. It lets us know the opinions of others on the subject and what not.

This Week

This week's class I wasn't very active in participating, not because of the discussion on diversity but because I was worried about a test I was about to take. That night I attended a performance of All Shook Up because I have a few friends in it. And it is fantastic! Unfortunately, this meant I had to miss planting with everyone but my little plant is now in its pot in my room.

I'm not exactly sure what frequency I should be watering it though, so we'll see how this goes.

Planting

I enjoyed hearing people's opinions about diversity and the positive/negative effect it has on society. I am one of the ones that views it as a neutral subject. It really depends on the person discussing it, if they see it as positive or negative. Also, I didn't quite understand why we had to stay after to present. I was looking forward to telling everyone about my life and I only got to tell the select few. We planted our mint plants on monday and I broke my actual pot, so I had to use an orange juice bottle. Hopefully it'll grow! :)

Class was very interesting this week! I really liked talking about diversity because its one of the things that truly effect us each day in life. Also, I was able to give my speech after class so i'm glad i was able to get that done with and out of the way! I'm also very glad we were able to plant our mint plants last night. However, i am very worried about mine surviving! I have nooo idea how often i'm supposed to water it, but i'm putting it in the sun like i'm supposed to! Oh well, i'll try my hardest! Cant wait until next class though! :)

diversity

I thought that our discussion or diversity in class yesterday was very relevent to our class as college freshmen. I think that it is important to talk about topics that bring about controversy because part of being in college and being on your own is forming your own opinions about prevelent topics in todays society.

We are so fortunate to live in a time where things are talked about much more openly than in past generations. From my experience, our generation as a whole is much more accepting of differences and different opinions, which is awesome :)

hello everyone... :)
class yesterday wasn't bad, i think it's really awesome that we discuss topics/issues in class that we are surrounded by everyday. it makes the class interesting, because we learn about things that pertain to us (unlike any of our other classes.) november the 22nd is going to be SWEET, a potluck lunch and friends makes for a wonderful afternoon.
i don't know about all of you BUT i really enjoy listening to others talk about their life and what they plan to do with it once they graduate. maybe that could be the class discussion for that date, just throwing that out there.
planting last night was also fun. i've never planted anything before so this can be the first. thank goodness we(cheyenne) chose mint because mint is yummy. um... i really wish the whole class would've shown up for this "group" project. it was super awesome for mrs. lopez to show up! it's neat spending time with the teacher outside of the classroom.

Class number...9? [11/8/2010]

So class today was pretty cool. We're back to normal in the good 'ole classroom. I enjoyed the discussion about diversity. It's interesting to hear other people's point of views about this controversial topic. The readings are a bit weird, I feel like they are kind of awkward stories sometimes...I'd rather just start talking about our lives and how everyone else grew up and how they have personally been affected by a certain topic. But, I'm assuming we have to read the book for the seminar curriculum... And I presented my autobiography today after class, that was actually not that bad. Maybe because we are all pretty comfortable with each other now and there was like 10 people in there =)
For our picnic, Mrs. Lopez asked us to think of topics to discuss. And it's kind of hard to think of something that the whole class would enjoy talking about. I think that one topic could be discussing our selected majors and what brought us to choose those particular ones and what career we plan on using those degrees for. But I'm sure a lot of people in our class are General Studies because we are freshman and that is very common to have not chosen a major yet. So I don't know if that would work well for a full discussion but it was just an idea.
Thank you Mrs. Lopez for posting our grades so far. I don't know about everyone else but I really appreciate seeing my grades and trying to figure out if I will make an A or what to do to get there. I'm a natural planner so I really hate surprises...well, unless it's a diamond ring. Or a big cake, those I will welcome.
And thank you to everyone who came out to plant tonight, especially Mrs. Lopez. I think we all appreciate that you came since you live off campus in a total different town and you have a family. I'm sure it's pretty difficult to fit anything in, so it means a lot that you really got involved in this project too!

Todays class was pretty interesting learning about diversity and I think diversity has a pretty neutral effect on people. It has opened my eyes to new ideas and different aspects of diversity. I can not wait to plant the mints in my pot tonight so that I can have a plant in my dorm. I am also excited for our class lunch and I am bringing an appetizer!

11/8 CLASS

So I missed todays class because I got the time mixed up...I thought class started at 1:30, when in fact started at 12:30. but from the blogs I have read, it sounds like we talked about diversity, which is an interesting topic. Texas State is a very diverse campus, and i love it. I think it is very important to get to know other people with different backgrounds and cultures than your own. when i showed up to class at 1:30 students were presenting their projacts so I stayed and watch them present. I will be presenting on the 22nd of this month, because we didn't have time to get to mine today. i am looking foward to seeing everyone tonight at 10pm to plant our plants!!!

The total points for the course are 575 (I removed the Common Experience speaker from November 4th). When you look at the course grade, don't freak out. There are only Cs, Ds and Fs at this point, because you don't have all of your points earned. You can view the points you have received to date by going to the Gradebook (to the left on TRACS site) and it will even break it down to each assignment and how many points you received. If you have questions, please let me know. Areas where the class has missed points are: blogging each week (I checked both TRACS and Blogger.Com), Not typing your comments about Colin Beavan on the blog, Missing Experiential Activities (you have til the end of the term to accumulate your 50 points, and the Group Project (these 40 points are not assigned, yet).  Many of you are on track for an A or B, if you will continue submitting blogs, attending class, participating in class and completing the experiential activities.
• I am debating some opportunities for extra credit. For those who have submitted a Student Success Plan and Resume (which is only a handful), you will receive an extra point to the final grade. It is not too late to submit these two items.

Diversity

Todays class was nice, I liked talking about diversity. Sometimes people avoid talking about certain topics because it can be considered "controversial." It is nice to talk about things that we usually do not get to talk about. The word diversity brings neutral feelings to mind for me. I think it can go either way-positive or negative.

I think everyone should just accept each other. (:
Which I know is a farfetched thought, but you never know!

Diversity

I felt that today's class had a pretty interesting topic to discuss. I do feel like Texas State does have a diverse student population and I personally enjoy that because I like getting to know people which is why I liked hearing people present their autobiography. I think we should embrace diversity and realize that it's cool to have different people who are so different than maybe we are. They can open our eyes to see different views on issues we know so little about. I just like learning about people other than myself. On this whole resume thing, I am a little unsure what to do but I think I can figure it out. I'm excited to plant tonight, so see everyone there! :D

Job Resume

Today before class, I created a job resume which I think is due in the online "drop box" by 12:30pm. While it was a somewhat simple assignment, it reminded me that I have participated in and accomplished many things in my life thus far. I was the drum major in my high school's marching band, the historian for our National Honor Society chapter, and more. Thinking about these things made me wonder how my fellow US 1100 classmates feel about their lives to this point. Perhaps I will find out more as our class continues to present its autobiographies.

We painted pots last week, they came out really cute and were going to pot our plants next time we meet up. I'm hoping my plants wont die because I've already killed my bamboo plant thats in my room. I cannot remember if next week is when we have out food thing or not, I guess illl look if the sign up list is up or not yet. I don't remember if I blogged or not next week because I keep getting behind on it. But the presentations have been good that weve been going in class.

Also Catching Up

Forgot to blog last week buut the presentations have been great! It's been fun getting to know a little more about everyone else in the class. Today's discussions about diversity went well too; maybe we could incorporate that into our class discussion topic? catching up

so i didn't blog before our last class because i didn't know if we had to or not so i'm gonna blog about my last 2 weeks tonight. first off i've been dealin with major family issues and fallin behind with a lot because it's been stressful. hopefully my plans to graduate from texas state come true but right now i'm considerin transferin to UNT for the 2011 fall semester. last monday we were supposed to meet to paint pots and once i got out of class i didn't feel too good and passed out early so sorry i missed out on that :/ i hope i can still pick up my pot from cheyanne maybe tomorrow?? also it was mentioned at the end of last class that we should be checkin our emails but i havent recieved anything about further pot planting or the class lunch so if someone could let me know that would be great! i hope yall are having a better week than me and enjoying the college experience. can't wait to see all of you tomorrow. now back to the books lots of homework and tests this week... boo!

presentations and plant potting

This week we met in Boko's Library once again! the presentations were great I learned a lot about my classmates and where they came from. it was very interesting. Not everyone that was suppose to present got to present so i believe we will finish up the presentations next class. Monday night the class met up and we all painted our pots...we are meeting again tomorrow night to actually paint them. we were going to paint last week but we all thought that would be a bad idea since our pots would be wet from the paint.

Class presentations monday

The presentations were excellent this time round. I liked all the presentations that were presented. I was suprised to see alot of powerpoints, I thought some people could have used a little bit more effort to present their autobiography, but it all worked out just fine. Overall the class went well and i found out more about some of my classmates. I also heard about the pot painting, but i had prior engagements to attend, so i hope that all went well. Susprisingly enough its been a pretty awsome week.

Plant Pot Painting

I am pleased with the plant pot painting activity, as I think it went very well. There was a good amount of students who attended and we socialized openly while painting, not appearing to be too self-conscious about contributing input to our various discussion topics. The event was not time consuming, we got to socialize and be relaxed, and we're one step closer to completing our group sustainability project!

Currently, my plant pot is sitting on my air conditioner, as is Michael's. However, mine has sparkles on it, which obviously makes it better and grants it magical properties. ;)

Mondays class Nov. 1, 2010

So today we met at Boko's place again to see more of the presentations that the rest of the class have done. Im glad I got mine over with on the firtst day and so I could just listen to everyone else. Everyone's presentations were really good and it was a shame we couldn't finish them all. After class at around 10 or so we met up and started to paint our pots which was fun. Looking foward to start planting them so that I can have a plant in my room very soon.

I presented my autobiography slideshow with my cats. I think I did pretty good even though I was a little nervous. I really liked Maggie's presentation :), She was extra creative with it. Painting my pot was such a blast! If I could do it all over again I definitely would. I can't wait until next week when we plant! It's going to be exciting! I pretty much have the best painted pot...just saying.

My Horrible Presentation/Awesome Painting Party

Hello fellow classmates. :) So I'm not going to lie, I do not like giving presentations. It was quite obvious that I'm terrible at giving them, so I hope you all don't think I'm too dumb because I promise I'm really a smart girl. Other than that, I enjoyed listening to everyone. It's interesting listening to everyone's life stories! Painting last night was super fun, I know a lot of us weren't looking forward to it but a lot of people showed up so it wasn't too bad after all. My pot is cute, it's black and white with a big pink "J" on it, YAY for arts and crafts! Adios mis amigos. Paz(peace) out. ♥

Presentations/Painting

Class was cool yesterday, I liked hearing everyone's presentations! Everyone did really well at presenting, and their presentations were interesting.

I enjoyed painting the pots. I'm not very good at painting, but I did my best! My favorite colors are pink and blue, and those are some of the colors that are on my pot(: I'm glad we got something done with this group project, and I'm looking forward to next Monday night when we get to plant the seeds. I hope my mint plant will actually grow and live...I don't exactly have a green thumb. I tend to accidently kill any plant I own. Not too sure how that happens. Ha. So I'll just have to take extra good care of this one so it will grow some mint leaves!

Painting Day

This week we decided to paint our plant pots so we can show that we're being productive. Next week we are actually going to plat them because it was too hard to put soil and seeds in while the paint was still wet. I was actually a little surprised and disappointed Mrs. Lopez did not show up. I just thought she said she was going to and because we're a class. Oh well. I was supposed to give my speech yesterday but we ran out of time so maybe i'll go next week! No rush though! Cant wait to see you guys next week!

Painting

Today I presented my presentation, I think I did pretty good at it. And then later we decided as a group to do our group project. We did the painting just a few minutes ago. We are planning to actually plant the plants next monday because the pots are drying right now and we do not want dirt all over the frsh paint.

Last day of presentations

Todays presentations were very interesting. It's nice getting to know people that live in very close quarters better. I am a little dissapointed I did not get to present my power point, but hopefully I can next week because it is awesome. Today was a good day, but I didnt get done with class till 8:00. We all just got done painting our pots and now we are fixing to plant!

2nd Presentation Day

So class today was pretty cool again. I liked everyone's presentations...but I wish I could have done mine today and got it over with. I get nervous in front of a lot people so I hate this anticipation :| But I will be doing mine in class...first, next time. So I guess it won't be super bad because ya'll will be quickly distracted by the normal class routine and hopefully forget about how dorky I am. See everyone in about 10 minutes to paint!! I hope everyone wears their paint clothes ;)

Becoming a Family

At the beginning of US 1100, I found myself a bit nervous, yet willing to talk with other people. Additionally, I felt that the sustainability was some sort of lesson explaining that people are supposed to change their ways or else bad things could happen, which can seem like a downer to many. However, I recently realized that our observations of sustainability are meant to bring us closer as a class, through things such as tonight's meeting to paint pots for planting. I do not know about the other US 1100 classes, but this one seems to be more about life lessons than just another "regular" class. Perhaps, by the end of this semester, I will have more friends who I would not have met without the class. :)

Presentations

I enjoyed hearing about people's lives and what influenced them to come to Texas State. I was supposed to go today, but due to technical difficulties, I don't get to present in Boko's Lounge. I was kind of looking forward to it. I forgot to post last week but I really enjoyed Cassaundra's(sp?) storybook. It was a creative take on this project.
I can't wait to plant tonight! :)

More Presentations

Presentations ran a lot smoother today and everyone talked really well so don't be shy when you get up there to talk...(even though I was). I liked hearing about people's lives and why they decided to come to Texas State. I am excited to paint our pots tonight and to get this project under way. Hope to see everyone there!

Once again we met in Boko's lounge to hear presentations. I would have to say that this has been my favorite part of this class because I love hearing about everyone's lives and being able to meet in a new place instead of the usual classroom. The down fall of meeting there, is that its really dark and makes me kind of tired.
